There are many Christian parents who are receiving the news from their son or daughter that they are gay, or that they are transgender. This news is not easy to process when you have prayed for your child since before they were born, seeking God's best for their life. I have met and spoken to a number of parents who are in this position, and there are no easy answers to the common questions, how did this happen, why my child, what can I do?
Over time, I have come to see that these questions are not necessarily helpful; my advice is that we don't dwell on the question of “how did this happen?”, rather on the “what am I going to do about this?”
In my experience this news from a son or daughter tends to elicit one of three responses:
1. Total rejection by the parent, a shame fuelled response.
2. The parent changes their doctrine to accommodate the news, embracing theology which challenges the traditional view of Bible texts which show homosexual actions to be sinful.
3. Battle commences, the parent harnesses the power of prayer to intercede and fight for their loved one.
The only biblical and loving response is 3. We are reminded in Ephesians 6, that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers and forces of this dark world. Battling for the spiritual welfare of your son or daughter starts with your unconditional love, requires faith, a commitment to God's word, and time invested in prayer.
If you have watched the movie “The War Room” you will know how important prayer is. As Clara says in the film, God does the heavy lifting all we need to do is seek Him, trust Him and stand on His word (watch this short clip https://youtu.be/DV4FxJErRKg).
The emphasis here is that we continue to stand on God’s word. We cannot allow Satan to muddy the water and cause us to question what God says. Remaining grounded in the Word of God gives you a solid foundation on which to build your prayer strategy. As you stand on God's word and claim His promises your prayer will be effective. You may not see immediate results, but persevere, for God is gracious and faithful to answer our prayers and deliver on His promises.
If you would like to have a deeper insight into what God’s word says, I cover it in much detail in my book, “Transformed by God's Love” which is available on Amazon or via my website.
