A few weeks ago, I preached on the topic “The world’s view of truth”, as part of a ten week preaching series which walks hand in hand with the “Freedom in Christ” course. This series is being run by my home Church who are within the Methodist denomination within the UK.
Yesterday I received word that the sermon had to be taken down off the internet. I would like to share the reasons for this request with you.
The sermon was based on Romans 12: 1-2 and the renewing of our minds, I spoke at length about the importance of recognising the will of God and then turning our thoughts towards this. It’s clear that the world perceives things in a very different way from God and I gave some examples.
In talking about the difference between the world’s view of truth and God’s view of truth I said:
“…..and then there’s gender identity, the world tells us we are on a spectrum, there are over 100 gender identities, God tells us he created us, male and female.”
This has been interpreted by someone who watched the sermon as a transphobic statement that could cause offense to people who listen to the sermon.
I then went on to say:
“we think about sexuality in a world that champions same sex relationships, yet God tells us that the sexually immoral will not inherit the Kingdom of God”.
For this statement I was told that: “Sarah puts into the mouth of God in the context of same sex relationships that those who are sexually immoral will not inherit the kingdom.”
Now I don’t know how well you know your Bible but let me just reassure you, I didn’t pluck those words out of mid-air you can read about this in the Bible for yourselves:
· Revelation 22:15
· 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
· Galatians 5:19-21
· Ephesians 5:5
The point being, we are different from the world and the world’s view of truth has become horribly distorted to the extent that now many are deceived, and many others are scared of speaking God’s truth. These lies and this fear has saturated many parts of the Church in the UK to the extent that Christian free speech is threatened with censorship. The sad result of this is that God’s message and word to the world which is a transformative message of love is being missed.
As someone who was in the LGBTQ community until I was 48 years old, I think I have a right and a calling to preach God’s clear word on this topic. I am not transphobic nor homophobic, far from it. I have a passionate love and purpose to see my friends saved, to make disciples, and I will continue to preach a message of salvation and hope to the lost, whatever their background.
I am deeply saddened by this directive and an inability of some Christians to see that we, the world, need to hear God's truth, however hard or painful that truth is. Better to hear it and act now, than to hear those words, get away from me, I never knew you...
Matthew 5:11-12 - Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
